HILARIOUS - AP calls out Joe Lieberman

Mon Aug 18, 2008 at 08:18:07 PM PDT

Thank you AP for giving us a good heartfelt chuckle this evening!  Fantastic.

His top contenders are said to include Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Less traditional choices mentioned include former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, an abortion-rights supporter, and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential prick in 2000 who now is an independent.

AP sides with Obama in roasting Corsi and 'swiftboating' book

Thu Aug 14, 2008 at 05:41:05 PM PDT

The Associated Press, in a major report by Nedra Pickler (oft-criticized by liberals), tonight clearly took sides against James Corsi, author of the bestselling "Obama Notion" book.

It came in a story about the Obama campaign's 40-page rebuttal of the book.  The surprise was the number of zingers that Pickler offered on her own.

Here are some of Pickler's own observations.

Nedra Pickler Blows Bogus "SURGE PURGE" Story

Thu Jul 17, 2008 at 07:54:57 AM PDT

He brought it to me like a puppy.  A troll on Eschatonblog came ranting about Obama's "purgery."  Naturally, I wondered what he meant.

Turns out, as usual, it's nothing.  You will hear that "Barack Obama's aides have removed criticism of President Bush's increase of troops to Iraq from the campaign Web site."

Ah, so Obama has removed criticism of the surge from his website ... other than this part, I guess:

Since the surge began, more than 1,000 American troops have died, and despite the improved security situation, the Iraqi government has not stepped forward to lead the Iraqi people and to reach the genuine political accommodation that was the stated purpose of the surge. ... But the absence of genuine political accommodation in Iraq is a direct result of President Bush’s failure to hold the Iraqi government accountable.

Yep.  No critism of the Surge there, right?

Morons.

McCain Bias at the Associated Press... Again

Wed Jul 09, 2008 at 04:56:46 AM PDT

As if having McCain's donut server use the AP as a public platform for hissy fits wasn't bad enough, everyone's favorite AP hack has now returned with a massive red herring tossed out as a sneering reaction to criticism of McCain's ludicrous balance-the-budget-by-winning-the-war plan.

The Obama Meltdown:  Day One  w/poll

Wed Jun 18, 2008 at 04:06:50 PM PDT

Update: This diary is in response to todays AP article by Nedra Pickler which I read at Yahoo news.com.

Today was the day that Barack Obama gave McCain a realistic opening to make this a real race. Barack's "let's not make bin Laden a Martyr" comments today are not what the doctor orders for a general election. You do not come out and get all thoughtful and compassionate when it comes to the mastermind of 9/11. As far as the American public is concerned, that man has to die.

So yes, this means I think Obama is PRESENTING himself as soft on terror. And at the very least, he has given the GOP a GOLDEN opportunity to portray him as such.

Nedra Pickler - A Seattle P-I "Analyst" ?!? (+Action Required)

Tue Apr 29, 2008 at 09:41:58 AM PDT

The major Seattle papers suffer from "split personality" - or "Part A/Part B disorder".

The Seattle Times often has excellent Part A features covering the environment and Iraq. It was the Times where flag-draped US military coffins were first shown. On the other hand, its Part B sucks - particularly in election times, when its estate-tax-obsessed owners impose a pro-Republican endorsement line.

What about the Seattle P-I? According to its editorial pages, it is a model of progressivism - the perfect paper for a city that has recently become a major competitor for the title "progressive capital U.S.A.". But Part A? Too often, the front page serves as a hidden ad for business interest, most notably the real-estate lobby.

And sometimes, P-I's editors just go to sleep and let the night people paste in whatever tripe AP sends their way. As, for example, in today's page A4, featuring an "analysis piece" on Rev. Wright by... none other than our sweet Nedra Pickler.

I think the P-I should get an earful from its progressive base over this. Contact details below the fold.

Fight back against another 527 hatchet job

Tue Apr 29, 2008 at 08:14:43 AM PDT

They're at it again.  The Orwellian-named "American Leadership Project," a collection of ad execs and career political hacks (with some help from some AFSCME) are running a new attack ad.

The ad is a classic 527 assault.  It doesn't even mention Clinton at any point.  Instead, it flimsily floats the claim that Obama doesn't "have a plan" to deal with the looming economic crisis.  It is purely negative, although it laughably casts itself as informative (suggesting that one call the Obama campaign, although it provides no means for doing so).

FRAGILE ?.... What the F*CK !

Sat Mar 15, 2008 at 05:55:29 PM PDT

The Story that is constantly spread about the Clinton campaign is that the "Media" has it out for her.

They are mean and nasty and never tell it correctly... (at least Mark Penn's version)

Well I've got news for you the campaign has at least one "news" organization in the bag

Did anyone else notice Nedra Pickler's fingerprints on NaftaGate?

Mon Mar 03, 2008 at 08:50:43 PM PDT

She's at it again. Just like she smeared Kerry, just like she printed the Obama/Muslim rumors, Nedra Pickler was the first to publish the contents of the Canadian memo in "Nafta/Gate."

"Show your patriotism" campaign a HUGE success

Wed Feb 27, 2008 at 05:44:05 PM PDT

A couple of days ago, I posted an action diary urging readers to go to an online tool enabling people to send letters to the editors of local and national papers fighting back against the smear tactics of AP "reporter" Nedra Pickler concerning Barack Obama's patriotism.

I'm writing now to report on the results, and to ask you to follow up.

First, the statistics: Collectively, more than 12,000 letters were sent to newspapers all across the nation.  That's nothing to sneeze at.  We're already starting to see some of those in online editions of papers across the country.

AP Serves Up Pickler Slop, News Orgs Lap It Up

Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 11:43:39 AM PDT

Nedra Pickler, writing for the Associated Press, penned an atrocious piece on Barack Obama's patriotism this week.  The article has rightly received loads of criticism and scorn throughout the blogosphere, as it was nothing more than a rehash of vile and debunked right-wing smears.  But the fact that Pickler scraped the blackened gunk from the bottom of the proverbial barrel to write her article didn't stop CNN and MSNBC and other news outlets from prominently featuring her steaming pile of journamalism.

While it's tempting to let Pickler's piece slide into the archived abyss of silly season as yet another example of (a) Pickler's sub-par reporting skills, and (b) the media's inability to discern jackassery from journalism, Pickler's article so egregiously offends both traditional standards of said journalism and traditional standards of logic that, like an on-looker who can't tear his eyes away from a grotesque accident, I find myself drawn to Pickler's horrific, mangled mess.

Let us begin with the the Associated Press Statement of News Values and Principles:

In the 21st century, that news is transmitted in more ways than ever before – in print, on the air and on the Web, with words, images, graphics, sounds and video. But always and in all media, we insist on the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior when we gather and deliver the news.

That means we abhor inaccuracies, carelessness, bias or distortions. It means we will not knowingly introduce false information into material intended for publication or broadcast; nor will we alter photo or image content. Quotations must be accurate, and precise.

It's nice to see the AP set a bar for their reporter's conduct.  Now, let's see Pickler bend over backwards in a stunning display of journalistic limbo as she maneuvers well below that bar.

Pickler's article is framed by the lede that "conservatives on Internet and in the media" have been "led to question [Obama's] patriotism."  Eight paragraphs in, we finally get two sentences from Obama himself (well, actually, from Obama's speeches), in which he points out that he frequently says the Pledge of Allegiance and that he attends a Christian Church.  And Pickler also gives retired Major General Scott Gration, an Obama military adviser, two sentences to rebut the claim and to point out that Michelle and Barack Obama are "extremely patriotic." A few other sentences help to provide "balance."

But there are some forty sentences in Pickler's tripe, many of which are based upon the observations of four crazy, right-wing "sources."  Well, five if you count Cindy McCain.

But let us leave Cindy McCain aside for one moment, and turn our attention to "Republican consultant Roger Stone," "conservative Republican consultant Keith Appell," "Steve Doocy, co-host of "Fox and Friends" on the Fox News Channel," and "former radio host Mark Williams."

In the article, Pickler quotes right-wing radio host Mark Williams as saying that Obama "felt it OK to come out of the closet as the domestic insurgent he is."

As if that quote isn't enough to automatically disqualify anyone as a source for any story (unless that story is about the destructive rhetoric from the radical right), the full quote and context reveal that Pickler's choice is far, far worse than the article lets on:

WILLIAMS: It uh, well first of all, Obama's very different than those other names, in that Obama says he took his flag pin off after 9-11, and he felt, apparently, some sort of an affinity or some sort of a connection, because at that point he felt it OK to come out of the closet as the domestic insurgent he is.

CORN: Oh, you know --

WILLIAMS: The Democrat [sic] Party is coming out of the closet as the domestic insurgency and the domestic enemy.

Williams go on in that interview to spew more lies and propaganda, claiming that Obama is "do[ing] his part to undermine this nation" and that there are "domestic enemies" in the "Democrat [sic] Party."  So Pickler chose not to quote just any "conservative," but she chose to quote an individual who implied Obama had a "connection" with 9/11 terrorists and who stated that the Democratic Party is essentially a party of traitors.

Not content with quoting just one vile wingnut, Pickler goes on to quote Roger Stone in all of his concern-trolling glory as he offers up that "many Americans" will find Obama's behavior "offensive."  Who is Roger Stone?  Well, as TPM and AmericaBlog point out, he is a longtime GOP trickster who is behind the group "Citizens United Not Timid: To Educate the American People About What Hillary Really Is."

And yes, folks, the bold font isn't for emphasis.  It's in their logo.  That's the group's acronym: C.U.N.T.

Steve Doocy, in turn, is well-known for, well, fitting in quite well with the rest of the gang over at Fox "News."

Ah, but wait!  It's not enough to have three conservative manipulators in one article.  The pièce de résistance of Pickler's piece is Keith Appell, a right-winger who was not only involved with the Swift Boat Veterans for Lies, but who was also a key player in pushing the Dan Rather story to Matt Drudge.  With credentials like that, he has to count for, like, four wingnuts, right?

There you have it.  "Journalism," Pickler-style.  One part rebuttal and 95 parts rubbish.  Mix them together, add a dash of sensationalism and a sprinkle of innuendo, spread over news outlets and, voilà!  Your noxious "story" is ready to be served to the masses, to that electorate whose news palate has become so desensitized by smears and sensationalism that it readily digests any garbage served to it by the failing fourth estate.

Bon appétit, America.  You can deliver your compliments to the chef at info@ap.org.

Nedra Pickler: Swiftboater Extraordinaire

Mon Feb 25, 2008 at 09:27:25 PM PDT

As mentioned in the DailyKos diary, "Show YOUR Patriotism: Fight back against the AP" Nedra Pickler repeats Repug's talking points, Pickler is the AP writer who pretends to be an objective AP reporter instead of a purveyor of rumors and innuendos. So let's find out more about Nedra Pickler: didja know she's "married to Eric Conner, who works for Fox News?" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nedra_Pickler). That (also from wikipedia): "in her coverage of the 2004 presidential race, Pickler drew criticism for her treatment of Democratic candidates, including Howard Dean and John Kerry."

Sun Feb 24, 2008 at 03:05:14 PM PDT

Here

No flag pin, no hand over his heart: Is he exposed?

Exposed as what exactly? Not wearing a flag pen is to be "exposed" for not adhering to the Fox News/Republican Party-version of patriotism, which means meaningless gestures like wearing a lapel pin are far more important than words and deeds?

AP's Nedra Pickler Sliming Obama Again!

Sun Feb 24, 2008 at 06:46:02 AM PDT

Well, here we are, Day Two after the full Swiftboat-style campaign has been fired up against Barack Obama. It started yesterday with an article written by the notoriously biased, Nedra Pickler (article here: http://news.yahoo.com/... ), entitled, "Obama may face grilling on patriotism". Then this morning, Pickler follows up with yet another, again carrying "Swiftboat" water, entitled, "Conservatives say Obama lacks patriotism. While today's article contains some re-hash from yesterday's hit piece, much is new.

Facing Defeat in Wisconsin, Clinton Says Change Rules

Fri Feb 15, 2008 at 06:59:22 AM PDT

Facing a rebuke from Wisconsin voters next Tuesday and the unknown from Texas and Ohio on March 4, Hillary Clinton is desperate and seeking inspiration from Karl Rove to rig a Democratic presidential primary.

"Easy answers elude Mich., Fla. Delegates," reads a headline this morning, referring to the ongoing flap arising because the DNC and Michigan and Florida last year could not agree on the timing of the states' presidential elections.

Ridiculous. The easy answer is: Don't change the rules in the middle of the game.

- Easy answers elude Mich., Fla. Delegates

Nedra, lost in space.

Wed Jan 09, 2008 at 07:30:23 AM PDT

I don't expect a lot from the MSM. But this is ridiculous.

Check this C&P from an AP story this morning by Nedra Pickler: http://news.yahoo.com/...

Clinton's win stunned both campaigns. She had been preparing to shift strategy to save her candidacy, while Obama had been hoping momentum would carry him to the nomination by Feb. 5 — when 22 states hold Democratic nominating contests.

Now the race will focus on who can score in the two states that come between now and them — Nevada on Jan. 19 and South Carolina on Jan. 26.

Now, I'm from the state of MI, (kinda still), in fact I'm from the Flint area, where our primary will be held on January 15, or as Ms. Pickler would say, "between now and them."

OMG! Journalism? At the Associated Press?

Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 12:49:27 PM PDT

I can't believe it.  Someone must have slipped something in my coffee this morning.  I actually just read a "fact checking" article on the AP, by Nedra Pickler, of all people, and it's...actually good journalism!  What is the world coming to?
